Wednesday, March 8, was International Women’s Day. Demonstrations, strikes and rallies were held around the globe. Here in the US, one of concept was, ‘A Day Without A Woman’. An idea to encourage women to go on strike and take the day off so the world would know how important women really are. Unfortunately, what the world really needs to do in order to understand the value of women is not attend another angry march—rather, they should just pick up a Bible.
The Bible is, and has always been, a book that pushes back against culture and the “ways of the world”. And while many would not believe it, the Bible has been a standard throughout history to champion, value women, and respect women. The Bible is, and has always been, a place where women are highly esteemed and honored. In stark contract to both ancient and modern cultures the Bible begins in Genesis by stating that both men and women (Gen 1:27) were created in the image of God. Throughout the ages when cultures have identified women as objects, property, and inferior subjects, Scripture has raised women to be equals with men. In the 10 Commandments, children are to honor both (Deu 5:16) father and mother. The Old Testament is full of women who are extolled, you can read about Sarah, Deborah, Jael, Ruth, Abigail, Hannah, and Esther. Proverbs 31 extols the qualities of a virtuous wife. And even though many point to Ephesians 5:22-24 as an example of the Bible’s subjugation of women—they fail to read the rest of the chapter. That part where husbands are commanded to love their wives (Eph 5:25-28), like Christ loved the church. Neither ancient nor modern culture or values women at such a level.
In all generations and all times, the Bible stands as an unbreathable fortress against the trends of culture. Never swaying, never faltering, never failing…consistently showing the value of His creation, the objects of His love—men and women. We are created in the image of our God, made to walk in intimate relationship with Him, and loved by Him beyond our wildest imagination. Men and women alike need to look no further than the pages of their Bibles to find their worth, value place in this world.
Tell me you thoughts.
