Thinking Ahead in 2017

2017 is here..! Another year has passed by and everyone is working on new resolutions. I resolve to lose weight. I resolve to read through the Bible. I resolve to read more books. I resolve to do better in my relationships. I resolve to do better with my money. I resolve to be a better man, husband, father, Christian, church-member, employee. All of these resolutions are great, and lots of people make them. Many who make them vow to begin on the first of the year. There is something about a fresh start that is appealing to us. I can eat what I want, but on the first–that is when I start the new healthy me! I will do a better job, starting on the first… I will stop being late, starting on the first… I will give more faithfully, starting on the first… We very fortunate God does not wait for the first of January for us.

I was thinking about the lyrics to an old camp song, “The Steadfast Love of the Lord”. While the melody may be an old camp song to most, the words are actually from a song of lament about the Jewish exile written around 2600 years ago. In Lamentations 3:22-23, the prophet records these words, “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” The Lord does not wait for  a new year, a sabbath, or some other event to demonstrate His love or to show His mercy. We should keep this in mind all year long–and it was probably not a good idea to overindulge in all of the fattening sweet food last night simply because your “diet” didn’t begin until today!
